The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks recounts the story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor southern African American tobacco farmer, whose cells—taken without her knowledge—were the first human cells grown in a lab and kept alive outside the body. These HeLa cells are an immortal cell line used in scientific research.
The poems, prose, photography, sculpture, and multimedia works found in this exhibit are a tribute not only to this unsung heroine, but also to the immortal power of the imagination.
DessART, Centre Gallery’s opening reception for this exhibit, will be held on Monday, March 31 from 12 - 1 p.m. and the closing reception will be held from 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday, April 4. For more information or to request accommodations for disability, please contact the Centre Gallery at 813-974-5464.
